New Novel Title and Cover Reveal

The title of my new novel is… FOUR. This relates to the plans that the protagonists have to visit four islands of Japan, over four seasons, during four trips so that they can cover four current social issues. Things don’t go to plan, however.

I’m really happy with the way that the cover worked out. The original concept was to have a montage of four photos – one from each of the four main cities visited by the protagonists. But, thanks to Covid-19, I wasn’t going to be able to get one of the shots I would have wanted as I’d not be able to get back to Japan in time. The use of a map, with stars marking the locations of the cities featured in the book works much better, I think (and the wide angle ties into a discussion in an early chapter).

I also like the way that the kanji for “four” (四) and “death” (死) (which ties in with some of the story itself) are formed in the shadow of the main title thanks to the two different views from the cameras. The choice of font is also not without significance, but I won’t say any more on that for now.

As for the colour scheme, the relevance becomes clear in the book and is also mentioned in another post, additional readers of the first book in the Iwakura series, Tokyo 20/20 Vision, should also realize what it is.

Further details about the book, which should be available later this month, can be found here: FOUR.
